Motzki exposes a paradox within non-Muslim scholarship:

Motzki states, “Non-Muslim scholars doubt that the Islamic tradition can be a historically reliable frame of reference for the Qur’an” (4). While non-Muslim scholars doubt that the hadith literature is historically reliable, they accept what the hadith reports say regarding the revelation of the Qur’an to Muhammad, and that it reflects the historical circumstances of his life.
