for students only
- Students, please e-mail me anytime. Please e-mail when you have a question about the reading or a paper, whatever it is, whenever it is. I live by the proverb, "A stitch in time, saves nine." I will usually respond within a few hours, if not then by the next day. I usually stop checking my e-mail around 9 PM.
- My office hours change every semester. Please consult the syllabus for your course.
- Personal note:
- Although I seem rather friendly after the initial scare wears off, do not lower your guard. In particular, take care at locations such as Uncommon Grounds or various feeding troughs around town. Please respect my time off-campus and I'll respect yours. In other words, if I find you drunk on Caroline St. I may say "hello" and laugh at your sorry state, but I will not start asking you questions about the reading. So if you find me swilling coffee at Uncommon or eating Sushi at Mino's, say "hello" and laugh at my sorry state, but don't ask me questions about the reading. Take my interest in professional wrestling very seriously and know that I am not your friend.
- Personal note addendum: Take a look at the main site this subdomain is on. It is the website for my work as a Progressive Muslim activist.

Weapons against Canards
Canard 1: "No Muslim has ever denounced terrorism"
Canard 2: Muslims do not engage in self-critical analysis with respect to the sources of terror in their own community and intellectual tradition.

A Note on "Fair Use"
I am a member of the Electronic Freedom Foundation. EFF fights for civil rights in the realm of digital information, innovation, and technology on line.
- Look at their discussion "Understanding Fair Use Rights"
The articles and readings I have posted on this site conform to EFF's summary guidelines of fair use as I understand them.
- "The copyright statute lists four factors to balance together on a case-by-case basis to determine if a particular use would be considered fair. The law's language does not preclude consideration of other factors however. The factors to consider include:
- 1. The purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of a commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes -- Courts are more likely to find fair use where the use is for noncommercial purposes.
- 2. The nature of the copyrighted work -- A particular use is more likely to be fair where the copied work is factual rather than creative.
- 3. The amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole -- A court will balance this factor toward a finding of fair use where the amount taken is small or insignificant in proportion to the overall work.
- 4. The effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work -- If the court finds the newly created work is not a substitute product for the copyrighted work, it will be more likely to weigh this factor in favor of fair use."
